Valenzuela Senior Citizens receive Free Eyeglasses, Eye Check-up

In observance of the Elderly Filipino Month Celebration, Valenzuela City Mayor WES Gatchalian (center) gifts double-lens eyeglasses to 450 qualified senior citizens during the Libreng Pasalamin para kina Lolo at Lola, at the ALERT Multipurpose Hall, November 9. Valenzuela City Social Welfare and Development Office and the Office of the Senior Citizens' Affairs (OSCA) were able to allocate another gift for the city’s elderly. The initiative of OSCA is supported by the Optometrist Society of CAMANAVA, the beneficiaries have undergone free testing last October 26, 2022. Some 450 senior citizens in Valenzuela City received free eyeglasses in a joint program of the City Government of Valenzuela through City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), Multi-purpose Hall, November 9.

Prior to the said distribution of the free eyeglasses, the beneficiary senior citizens first undergone a series of visual tests and eye check-up to determine the degree of their eye condition so that the eyeglasses will fit their eye grade. Optometrists from Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela (CAMANAVA) Optometric Society supported the initiative of City Mayor WES Gatchalian through eye consultations and check-ups.

Since the month of October is the celebration of the Elderly Filipinos Month, the Valenzuela City Government has created multiple projects nurturing the elderly in the city. In accordance to the existing Republic Act No. 9257 also known as the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003,” which aims to give the senior citizens a more convenient lifestyle in return for their contributions to society, the local government also passed ordinances that will secure a more comfortable lives for the elderly.

During the Elderly Filipino Month in October, senior citizens can avail of free movies in all cinemas in the city (Ordinance No. 159, Series of 2014). They are also entitled to free parking (Ordinance No. 446, Series of 2018).

During the Libreng Pasalamin program, Ellen Bondoc, 70, one of the beneficiaries, extended her appreciation and gratitude for the local government because they never felt neglected even though their time are already numbered.

“Nagpapasalamat ako kay Mayor [WES Gatchalian] dahil sa magandang proyekto para sa aming mga senior citizen. [Nais ko] na ang mga benefits [para] sa seniors ay ma-avail naming lahat,” She said. [I thank Mayor WES Gatchalian for the good project for the senior citizens. I wish that we can all avail the benefits for the senior citizens]

Local Chief Executive Mayor WES Gatchalian personally handed-out the provided free eye-glasses to the beneficiaries.
