In preparation for the upcoming Reading Camp 2022, the City Government of Valenzuela in partnership with the Synergeia Foundation holds a Teachers’ Training for Reading Camp for public school teachers at Valenzuela City Town Hall, July 27 - 28.

A total of 433 public elementary school teachers from the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Valenzuela actively participated in the first face-to-face teaching camp after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic.

Synergeia Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr. Milwida ‘Nene’ Guevarra together with Mr. Joaquin Hagedorn and Ms. Teresita Villacorta facilitated the program and various activities that would equip the teacher-volunteers with knowledge and skills in preparation for the upcoming Reading Camp which aim is to help improve the reading skills of the frustrated level readers and non-readers in Valenzuela City.

Education 360 Degrees Investment Program Director, Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad – Borja expressed her gratitude to teacher-volunteers, “Nagpapasalamat kami sa inyo kasi tumugon kayo sa hamon para tulungan ang mga bata. Sa tulong ninyo magkakaroon ng intervention para sa mga batang nagstruggle sa pagbasa.” (We thank you for responding to the challenge to help the children. With your help there will be an intervention for children who struggle with reading.)

City Mayor WES Gatchalian in his message, he said, “Alam ko mabigat na sakripisyo ito dahil we will be targeting more than 8000 students ang ating tututukan. Kaya po minarapat namin ni Vice Mayor Lorie na magbigay ng konting allowance.” (I know this is a heavy sacrifice because we will be targeting more than 8000 students. That's why Vice Mayor Lorie and I decided to give a little allowance.)

Teachers who volunteered to participate in the Reading Camp will receive an allowance from the City Government and service credits from SDO Valenzuela. Further, they will be provided with a lesson plan prepared by the Synergiea Foundation for reading camp sessions.

Currently, Valenzuela City has recorded 808 non-readers and 7873 frustrated readers students among grade three to grade six students based on the assessment conducted by the SDO Valenzuela. These students are subject to Ten-Day half-day Reading Camp from August 8 – 19 and will be reassessed after the camp to gauge the students’ improvement.

Students who will complete the ten-day session will be rewarded with a Joliibee Gift Certificate.

Joining the Teachers’ Training Camp were Principal Consultants from the Department of Education (DepEd) -  Valenzuela, Ms. Josie Fernando, Ms. Luz Camarista, Ms. Celina Cloa, and Ms. Rosarie Carlos together with Assistant SDO Superintendent Ms. Rustica Lorenzo.

Teaching Camp is part of the Education 360 Degrees Investment Program, the holistic, comprehensive, and student-centric approach to uplift the quality of education in the City.
