“Live the moment.”

This has been the mindset of Nicko L. Tumala when he took the March 2017 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), which pushed him forth at 4th place in the country’s most important qualifying test for aspiring school teachers.

Mr. Tumala got an impressive rating of 91.60% in LET for secondary education level, which made him one of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela’s (PLV) most esteemed alumni. He finished Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in Mathematics at PLV in 2016.

He recalls falling in love with teaching when he was chosen as the class’s “student-teacher for a day” by his high school teacher. From then on, he started to enjoy imparting knowledge to other people and dreamt of seeing himself as a teacher.

According to Mr. Tumala, a person should be very much willing to teach and to share his skills to become an effective educator. “Ang pagiging titser kasi ay isang napakalaking responsibilidad. Hindi lang ito basta propesyon dahil isa itong bokasyon [Being a teacher is a big responsibility. It is not just a profession but it shall be considered as a vocation],” he added.

He was raised in Barangay Gen. T. de Leon by a simple yet supportive family. He is second child to a father who is a construction worker and a mother who is a factory worker.

Currently, Mr. Tumala is an academe in PLV teaching Mathematics in senior high school students. He is planning to take a masteral degree to be a more worthy servant of education.
