It’s a YES!

The division of Barangay Canumay in Valenzuela City to create two (2) new barangays to be known as Barangay Canumay West and Barangay Canumay East was ratified and approved today by the majority of its residents through a peaceful plebiscite.

Valenzuela City COMELEC - District 1 Election Officer, Atty. Patrick E. Enaje, who served as the Chairman of the Canumay Plebiscite Board of Canvassers, certified under oath the results of the official canvassing held at the Session Hall of the Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Valenzuela.

The affirmative votes thwarted the opposition with an overwhelming 3,645 votes out of the 6,543 total votes casted, with “YES,” winning in 81.6% of the 38 clustered precincts.

The North Luzon Express Way (NLEX) physically divided Barangay Canumay into two. It necessitated the creation of two (2) barangay halls, duplicating the day care center to accommodate the children of the displaced portion of the barangay and establishing separate health centers and public schools.

On November 21, 2011, the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Valenzuela City approved the Ordinance No. 37, Series of 2011, otherwise known as, “An Ordinance Dividing Barangay Canumay and creating two (2) new barangays to be known as Barangay Canumay West and Barangay Canumay East, subject to all legal and existing rules and regulations.”

With the creation of Canumay West and Canumay East, it is expected that there will be swifter and more efficient delivery of public service, immediate and adequate attention to the peculiar needs of the communities, the two new barangays, being distinct and independent from each other, will have its own sources of revenue, and there will be faster response to emergency and peace and order situations.

With the division of Barangay Canumay, Valenzuela City now has a total of 33 barangays.
