Valenzuela City received donations of children's books, toys and blocks from the Rotary Club of Valenzuela West and its American counterpart, the Rotary Club of Kerrville, Texas, USA as a boost to its Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) program.

The supplementary daycare materials were received by Ms. Dorothy G. Evangelista, Officer-in-Charge of the City Social Welfare and Development Office CSWDO and Ms. Edwina R. Fernando, focal person of the CSWDO's ECCD program.

Asked how her office was approached for the project, Evangelista shares that Mr. Rick Yu, a former president of the Rotary Club of Valenzuela West, called her last Christmas to tell that they and the Rotary Club of Kerrville were donating books. She was asked if it was possible to donate them to the City's Daycare Centers.  “Of course, we have recently finished [putting up] seven new Daycare Centers, so kulang pa sa gamit ang mga iyan, so we readily accepted their donations; these are for the [less] fortunate children somalaking tulong iyan.  (Of course, we have recently finished putting up seven new daycare centers but they lack adequate materials yet, so we readily accepted their donations; these are for the less-fortunate children, so these would help a lot.)” Evangelista further stated.

Present during the ceremony were Rotary Club of Valenzuela West President, Mr. Philip B. Sabino and representative from the Rotary Club of Kerrville, Texas, Jeff Wendling. Wendling shared how the project started.  “Individual [members] started the initiative.  Stephanie Miller (of Kerrville) and Rick Yu (of Valenzuela West) had a discussion of ‘what can they do,’ I mean, ‘what can Kerrville do,’ and they decided to do this.  Stephanie Miller took it upon herself to organize the opportunity to get books and donations to be able to box it up and send [them] for distribution to the little kids".

Rotary International, in which the two clubs belong to, is an international organization which main objective is to provide public service “in the community, in the workplace, and around the globe.”  It has over 34,000 clubs worldwide, with members totaling to nearly 1.2 million.

Also in attendance at the turnover were daycare children, teachers, Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) presidents, and officers of the Daycare Welfare Association (DCWA), headed by Freddie B. Caputero.
