Valenzuela City Mayor REX Gatchalian has earned his second term as the city’s chief executive after winning 74 per cent of votes during the May 9 local elections.

Mayor REX and the other newly elected city officials were proclaimed by Jayvee Villagracia, chairman of the city board of canvassers, and Lemuel Nobleza, city prosecutor and vice chairman, as the winners of this year’s local polls, during the wee hours of the morning, May 10, at the city’s Session Hall.

The incumbent mayor garnered  a total of 190,856 votes, or 74.48 per cent, against rival Magi Gunigundo’s 65,373, or 25.51 per cent.

Likewise, Mayor Rex’s running mate and councilor Lorie Natividad-Borja landed the vice mayor seat, having collected 162,131 votes, or 66.99 per cent. Her opponent, councilor Mar Morelos garnered 79,885 votes, or 33 per cent.

Among the District 1 councilors, Tony Espiritu led with 77,752 votes, or 12.99 per cent. On the other hand, Kim Galang collected a total of 94,520 votes, or around 12.86 per cent, the highest in District 2.

Alay Buhay Party List Representative Wes Gatchalian’s 92,541 votes and Vice Mayor Eric Martinez’ 86,069 earned gained them the congressional seats for District 1 and District 2, respectively.

Meanwhile, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) data show voter turnout in the city reached 83.95 per cent, or 267,755 actual voters out of 318,931 registered voters.
